A case of Second season syndrome

Sheffield United impressed many last season with their no fear counter attacking style. But this season is promising to be a rocky one for Mr Wilder’s team. Losing arguably the best goalkeeper in the division last season,Dean Henderson hasn’t helped(Surprised they hadn’t tied him to a permanent deal for 2 seasons). History has shown that sides who do exceptionally well after promotion tend to struggle the next. Psychological perhaps. Examples include Ipswich Town in 2001 who after gaining promotion finished an amazing 5th position (Europa league spot). They havent signed any new players this window, perhaps again showing their board’s unwillingness to spend beyond budget( Wise though God knows we don’t want another Portsmouth on our hands).

How fanatical should fans get?

Raise up your hands if you know Gunter Parche.? If you are saying hey man who the hell is Parche ,well he believe it or not changed tennis history forever one April day in 1993.

Gunter, an avid Steffi Graf fan decided to go watch the Hamburg Open on 30 April 1993. Being German himself this was not out of the ordinary. His eagerly awaited match, 19 year old rising star of the game, world number 1 Monica Seles taking on Magdalena Maleeva in the quaterfinals. With Seles leading 6-4,4-3, what happened next was something more out of a Friday the 13th movie than a tennis match. With Seles seating during break in games,Gunter ran from his seat to the court barrier behind Seles and stabbed Seles clean between her shoulder blades with a knife. Parche was tackled to the ground by security details and an ambulance was called for Miss Seles.

Miss Seles survived barely with her life on that day, none of a vital organs were damaged in the attack. She would make her comeback 2 years later but she was never quite the same. But the focus of my blog today is on Gunter Parche and what drove a seemingly innocent man to such depths of insanity. Born in 1954 in Hengen Germany,he was an unemployed lathe operator. This may have contributed to his mental instability. According to the Springer Link, unemployment causes feelings of stress, hopelessness and uselessness. This may cause what’s called”unemployment hysteresis”. Speculation that it was a politically motivated attack(Seles was Yugoslavian) were dismissed as hooey by the German police.

Gunter was said to be a loner with obsessive behavior. As a fan one should try to interact with like minded individuals. This has particularly helped me a lot as other fans tend to act as voices of reason when I take my fanaticism too far. So if you are a fan of any sport please take it easy, breathe, talk to someone,go out meet new people.

The end game for Herr Parche was a suspended prison sentence and mandatory psychological treatment. As controversial as that judgement may be ,i think it was just under the circumstances, jail wouldn’t have cured that broken bloke.

Is Neymar overrated and I’ll disciplined

I was checking out PSG Vs Olympique Marseille last night. Well this is the French version of El Clasico and it’s drama did not disappoint. Marseille were deserved winners against a wasteful Paris side who lacked sharpness in front of goal. My focus today is on PSG attacker Neymar.

Let me start off by saying Boldeagle does not condone racism and any of it’s manifestations. Now that it’s out of the way I would like to candidly say Neymar should not use racism as a cover for his poor performances. Been watching him since the champions league finals in Portugal last month he has been particularly wasteful especially with only the keeper to beat. I understand in the particular Marseille game players went down easily,a lot of play acting etc but Neymar should understand he is a senior player at the club(At one point he was the captain of the Brazilian National team). Neymar for me is a player who can easily become the next Ballon D’Or winner. Same goes for Kurzawa.

Chelsea kick off season in style

Big spending Chelsea started the season well with a 3-1 win at Brighton. However the defensive frailties that characterised the back end of last season persisted as evidenced by the goal. All in all the result matched the performance.

The future of tennis is here

Yesterday we witnessed the passing of the guard in tennis world. One of the rare finals to not feature the big three of tennis and my God it was a breath of fresh air. Dominic Thiem a deserved winner of a first grand slam title although I find it surprising it was at the US Open. His game is more suited for clay him being more of a base line guy (pardon the expression) but heck congrats to him.
