LIGUE 1:METZ VS LILLE

La Liga’s loss is Ligue 1’s gain as Messi completed his move to PSG. This is sure to raise the profile of the French league which is in dire need of star power. The league does have competition though compared to other major leagues in Europe and last season it produced a “surprise” league winner in the form of Lille. Now Lille did well in keeping the likes of Yilmaz , Ikone and Jonathan David for the season with interest in them red hot at the moment. Lille opened their league season at Metz and they found themselves in a very precarious position after the hour mark. There are two plays that got my attention in this match. The first was the red card for Metz’s Koyate on 56 minutes which turned the tide in favor of the Champions. Does Koyate’s tackle tick the red card boxes? First the tackle is not out of control, the tackler does miss the ball but only catches the attacker with his heel. Secondly the tackler got the ball first with his right foot which entitles him to the benefit of the doubt. The challenge is a yellow card offense. The Lille player sold his pain really well there.

The second and last talking point from this clash is the goal chopped off for offside , which resulted from the free kick. I have replayed it almost to the point of exhaustion I do not see any offside in that one unless the VAR is saying the Lille player who was in an offside position when the free kick was taken was interfering with play which surely he wasn’t. Surely not for a foul on the Metz number 7 player on the goal line? The 11 men of Lille at the end proved too much for Metz at the end as they succumbed to the late onslaught albeit through a 97th minute own goal by their keeper. Lille off to a shaky start in Ligue 1.
