You have to go back almost 50 years to find the last British ladies champion at Wimbledon. On Saturday an A Level student raised a nation’s hopes of finally ending that wait. Emma Raducanu reached the fourth round of Wimbledon by beating Sorana Cirstea of Romania in straight sets playing some breath taking tennis. This is her first main draw run at the Grand Slam having gotten a wild card. The play of the week is her astonishing defense in the second set leading 6-5(15-0). Cirstea looked to be favorite during the rally with Emma slipping right at the start of it. Cirstea hit a cross court forehand right to the corner which Emma struggled to get a racquet to but did(only just). It looked point over for the Brit but she got to Sorana’s forehand down the line with a backhand cross court for the winner. I guess the racquet drop is her own version of the mic drop. Nice point, thoroughly deserved win.
