FRENCH OPEN:KREJCIKOVA VS SAKKARI

Unseeded Barbora making her first ever major final at expense of 17th seeded Sakkari of Greece. She looked on her way out facing match point at 5-3(40-30) final set but dug deep. Maria won most of her points on her own serve after the long rally illustrating the most powerful side of her game. Check out the clip at 2-1(30-30) having just gone a break up. The forehand down showing the early dominance from the Greek. There was no shortage of break point chances either side. A total of 26 break point opportunities combined with Barbora shading it 7 to 6 in terms of conversion. Nerves. This was a first time semi final of a Grand slam and holding serve proved problematic for the two. Barbora edging out the set 7-5 at the end but it took an unforced error by Maria at set point 40-15 to achieve that.

Barbora has a majestic backhand. Check out 1-0 second set first point. Almost golf like posture the opponent can’t tell which side of court she is going for until the very last second. Sakkari dominant again at the start of that set going double break up 4-0. The fight back from the Czech was eventually halted at 5-4. Maria in all fairness was fortunate to get that point that sealed the set. Going down the line was the sensible option but her backhand proved to hot to play for Barbora. The third went to the 16th game after Sakkari’s failure to close out at 5-3. Maria constantly played to the backhand the strongest suit of the Czech and was duly punished on match point 8-7 adv Krejcikova. Sakkari had done well in the rally to play some shots to the forehand but the drop shot let her down and was probably the wrong shot to play or try at that juncture of the match. Krejcikova will play Russian Pavlyuchenkova in Saturday’s final guaranteed to produce a first time major Champ.
