GIRO D’ITALIA STAGE 5

The relatively crash free Giro was interrupted by a series of crashes on Stage 5 which ruined an otherwise good race. From Modena to Cattolica, the topography was relatively flat making conditions ideal for a competitive sprint finish.Aussie Caleb Ewan winning the stage. Alessandro De Marchi however is in control of the tour as far as the general classification is concerned.

Now, as for the crashes. Mikel Landa who gave a good account of himself in Stage 4 crashed out of the race with 4 km to go. It seems the Spaniard crashed along with stage 4 winner Joe Dombrowski in a road island together with a steward who was directing traffic away from it. Now the question is was the steward wearing bright reflective clothing? Was he positioned on the island or on the side of it and did he have a flag? I would like to think riders study the course before the actual race, so why were they surprised to find the traffic island at all? If the answer to the first two questions is no then Landa and Joe have a right to be livid. Landa required medical attention and were evacuated to hospital and his Giro is OVER. Joe finished the race to keep his hopes for the Tour win alive.

Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) also had a crash on 15km but he had scanned and will compete again. Back to the finish, and it was a frantic one.Elia Viviani (Cofidis(in red jersey) gave as good as it gets in the final sprint. Watch him smartly try to come up on the right blind side of the bunch to steal the lead. But Caleb Ewan was all power and won the sprint deservedly. Giacomo Nizzolo deserves all the plaudits for a well run race in finishing second. Viviani finished third.
