STUTTGART TENNIS GRAND PRIX:BRADY VS KVITOVA

The clay court season for the WTA is in full swing making a stop in Stuttgart, Germany. Defending champ Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic triumphing over Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady of the USA. Petra is a fairly tall lady. That can be both an advantage and a disadvantage on the tennis court. The advantage is when you serve you make the ball hard for the opponent to return by making it bounce higher. The disadvantage is that you struggle to get down low for those near the net shots, to illustrate watch the clip with match at 1-0 to Petra, Brady up 30-15. Kvitova got to the ball at the end of the rally but could only make a token shot back into court leaving Brady to make a simple forehand winner.

Picking it up at 2-2 with Kvitova serving up 40-30, it is clear Petra should do more work on her drop shots, twice in the rally that she hit the ball with the drop shot too high. In the end she lost the point , Jen doing great court coverage. Petra was finding the right areas with her forehand shot in the first set. Brady faltered when it mattered the most. In the tenth game, serving to stay in the set at 5-4, Kvitova punishing a short serve with a forehand down the line. Clearly a change of tact was needed in the second set by the American. Serving to Petra’s forehand just was not going to cut it. Sadly at the start of the second , Jen had not learnt her lesson. Just watch 2-1 to Kvitova, Brady up 30-15. Crucial point in the very same game, this time Brady had adv on Deuce. Petra with a back hand that clipped the corner of the court to save the game point. Impressive is that it was the Czech’s weaker arsenal. Kvitova would break and go on to lead 4-1.

Brady gave it all she could to save match point at 5-2 down. But there was no denying Kvitova who closed out the match 6-3 on her own serve.
