MIAMI OPEN:DIYAS VS VENUS WILLIAMS

The main draw for the Miami Open got underway on Tuesday with a first round tie between veteran American Venus Williams against Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan. With sister Serena not participating in Miami due to oral surgery, Venus was hoping to make the Williams family proud with a decent run. It did not happen that way as she succumbed to a straight sets defeat 6-2 7-6. Venus gave a good account of herself particularly in the tie break set but she was blown away in the first. Venus’s movement was slow showing every bit of her 40 years of age(watch 1-0 40-30 on Diyas serve). There were glimpses of the old Venus form that led her to 7 majors(watch 2-1 40-15 on Venus Serve), the back hand did not have that much power but the placement superb. At times Venus was her own worst enemy.2-2 break point on her serve at 30-40, Diyas played a forehand return from Venus’s serve very short leaving the American left to smash a forehand for the easy point and to duece we go. But no she did not do that. Instead she played a weak forehand which Zarina swallowed whole with an emphatic forehand down the line.

Venus was a player reborn in the second set. Her winners count spiked. Case in point check out the monster back hand winner 2-1 40-15 to hold. She took command of the set at 4-1 then allowed her opponent to seize back the initiative. How about that majestic drop shot in the sixth game from the Kazakhstani. With her back to the wall with Zarina serving for the match at 6-5, Venus produced the goods, the forehand at break point sending the match to the breaker.Venus looked sharp in that breaker clawing her way back from a mini break down at 2-0 to 2-2 with aggressive net play. The crucial points in that breaker were won by Zarina and that proved to be decisive.
