Karatsev wins this one over compatriot Rublev in an all Russian semi.Wild card Aslan whose run to the Aussie Open semis earned him the spot on the main draw. There are two types of tennis players, one that likes to go on the front foot early during rallies and the other who likes to go on defensive early and look for the opportunity later. Aslan is the former. Going up a break 3-2 was the turning point of the first set. Aslan was very good in this set. Rublev for the first time in a while looked lost, failing to cope with both forehand and back hand shots. Jumping to the all important 7th game of the second set. Andrey in trouble down 0-30 on his serve, fought back to deuce. It is on deuce that the shot of the match happened.

With advantage to Rublev an angled forehand by Aslan showing great wrist motion brought the game back to deuce. That gave Andrey confidence to go on to level the match at a set each.Aslan brought out the big shots again in the third game of set 3 at 1-1 to break with a little help from Rublev double faulting on break point. With confidence supped from him,Rublev shanked a forehand to hand Aslan the unassailable double break to make it 5-2.Karatsev could afford to hand one of this breaks back to his compatriot. He won the set 6-4 to set up an all unseeded final with Lloyd Harris of South Africa.
