DOES THE ATP SHOW ROGER FEDERER FAVORITISM?

The recent ATP rankings which were released this week after the Doha ATP 250 tournament raised the ire of some players on the tour. The rankings show that Roger Federer who has been out for over a year with a knee injury and surgery was placed at number 6 above players who have been in scorching form namely Andrey Rublev(8) and Sasha Zverev(7). It is made even worse by the fact that Roger lost his SECOND MATCH BACK against eventual winner in Doha Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia. Rublev, the ATP 500 specialist, has won the last 4 of that tournament classification. The ATP froze rankings when the lockdown started in 2020 and when play restarted they introduced a revised system. It works like this. Players earn points according to number of events played. However there is a cap on the number of tournaments which are considered for awarding of points. In 2021, 19 events count towards ranking so even if you play say 22 events the other three wont change your position much.

8 RUSAndrey Rublev235,0112700
9 ARGDiego Schwartzman283,6402600

From the above one can see that Roger has played only 17 tournaments from start of 2020. Which begs the question, if it is the fact that a lot of ATP 1000 tournaments were canceled during the last year, why not elevate status of some of the 500 or 250 tournaments to at least reward the players who have risked their health and traveled during a period of uncertainty? If a player is injured like Roger it is fair that they are given reprieve, so what the ATP does in increasing the matches to contribute to the points by one to twenty is commendable. I am in favor of a system that favors those players that show up rather than favoring those that target certain tournaments.
