AUSTRALIAN OPEN DAY 3

Three time grand slam champ and 2014 Aussie Open winner Stan Wawrinka crushed out of this year’s tournament going down in a marathon 5 setter in Melbourne to unseeded Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. Marton won the first set 7-5 breaking the Swiss’s serve early on to take a 2-1 lead. He coped well with the Sergi Bruguera- like back ends from the 2 time French Open champ Stan.To Big Stan’s credit he managed to get the break back in the 8th game to level the scores at 4-4 with patient baseline hitting which forced Marton into making unforced errors. With the set in the balance at 5-5 it was Wawrinka who choked first handing Fucsovics the break for a 6-5 lead. The second set was surprisingly one sided. Stan being broken in his first service game did not help at all.He made too many unforced errors. He should have varied the play a little, being stuck on the baseline as if coming to the net was a crime was not helping. 6-1 to the Hungarian in the second set and cruising looking a sure bet for the third round.

Well it took a while but Stan woke up in the third set. Winning it 6-4. The tide turned in his favour when he started to attack the net more and hitting his shots more accurately. He returned the favor given by Marton in the second set and broke the Hungarian in his first service game of the set. Big Stan took the momentum into the fourth breaking Marton in his first service game of that set as well. The Swiss started finding the corners with relative ease, Marton struggling to win points now. Fucsovics had a huge 17 break point opportunities in the entire match but only converted 6. He needs to find that extra push within him in the later rounds in order to improve that stat. Moment of the match. A sign from abopve probably that Stan was not going to win. Leading 5-2 and 30-0 on his serve, he shot a routine backhand long with a humongous open court to aim at. It did not affect him winning the set but it must have been damaging psychologically to miss such a sitter.6-2 to Wawrinka fourth set.

On to the fifth and last set. Set went on serve with both determined on to let it slip at such a crucial juncture of the match, until the 8th game that is. Fucsovics pounced on some weak serving by Stan 4-3 with the game on deuce(Adv Marton) to break and lead 5-3. Now Stan really had his back to the wall. Stan showed some fight to break back straight away. Marton’s big match inexperience probably on show here.Everyone did not do anything rash so off to the tie break we went. First mini break to Stan for 1-0 from an unforced error from Marton. Stan quickly built ahead of steam to mini break once more to take it to 5-1. And then he let Fucsovics back in. His trusted backhand started misfiring again. His forehand was not faring any better either. 9-6 he led at this juncture needing just 1 more point to clinch it. Then an unforced error, hitting the net 9-8… another one forehand down the line gone wide 9-9. Back hand hitting the net 9-10. The coupe de grace?A weak attempt at a lob duly pounced on by the combative Hungarian for an exclamation point smash to win it 9-11. Big Stan not so big with his unforced errors.
