Since the turn of the year, the Italians Berrettini and Fognini have been on a roll. Despite eventually finishing runner up to Russia in last week’s ATP Cup final, their showing last week make them one of the players to watch out for this fortnight at the Open. I watched Berrettini face South Africa’s Kevin Anderson yesterday in Melbourne and Matteo barely broke a sweat against a one time Wimbledon finalist. Most impressed by the giant South African’s movement in the first set despite him succumbing eventually to the hard hitting Italian to 11-9 in the tie break. Not surprisingly, Kevin had more Aces than Matteo(18 to 14). His height is definitely an advantage he utilizes very well when serving. He pushed Berrettini to the brink of another tie break in the second set but a combination of bad luck(net cord) and a lethargic service game saw the Italian win it 7-5. The point of the match.Third set, Berrettini leading 2-1 with Kevin serving, game on deuce. Kevin failed to give purchase on a routine overhead which Matteo returned with a forehand stamped MONEY on it. The Italian looked more comfortable on serve than Kevin in this set. Berrettini broke once in this twice in this match, each one being decisive in the direction the set went. He closed out the match 6-3 in the deciding set, the exclamation point back hand winner down the line on point.
