LIGUE 1: MARSEILLE VS PSG

I had to make this one my match of the weekend given the history between these two sides. If you bet on this one ending without the ref brandishing red on someone better think again. Dimitri Payet’s red in the 90th minute means the main men in either side(Neymar for PSG) saw red in both ties this season. PSG had been on a slide this last month or so ,so it was no surprise they were content in hitting the home side on the counter.

The opening goal came from such a counter. A quick break from a break down in attack by Marseille was the route the Paris side used. Mbappe outpacing the defence to slot past the keeper Mandanda. The second goal for Paris scored by Argentine Icardi was a painfully simple goal to concede. A hopeful flick somehow looped over a helpless Mandanda who could do nothing except curse his misfortune. Marseille were good value for most periods of the game but they could not beat a disciplined defence which no doubt got their drill instructions from former defender Pochettino their coach. 9/12 the home side found the target to the visitors 2/9 . One can see that converting chances is Marseille’s Achilles Heel. Both sides were equally rough at play with 12 fouls each but it was the brutal manner at which Payet’s open footed high challenge felled the opponent that earned the former West Ham playmaker his marching orders. PSG keep in touch with log leaders Lille and second place Lyon ,they lie in third four points from the top.
