GERMAN CUP:BAYERN CRUSH OUT AT HANDS OF MINNOWS

The holders of the DFB-Pokal crushed out at 2. Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel after penalty shoot out drama on Wednesday night. It was not as if Bayern fielded a second string team. It was basically their strongest 11 except for the absence of Lewandolski and Alaba. Spotting their retro style shirts, Bayern took the lead on 14 minutes after an easy catch was somehow messed up by Holstein keeper Gelios. The kit resembled the one won in the 80s by the German giants designed by non other than Pharrell Williams. Thomas Muller had no where to hide from his shameful miss from a meter away from goal. The same defensive issues exploited by Gladbach at the weekend were at play for the Holstein equalizer.Bartels on 37 nminutes found space between right back Sarr and Sule to latch on to a through pass, slotting it past Neuer.

In the second half, normal service looked to have been restored when Bayern took the lead on 48 minutes. A masterful Sane free kick beating Gelios hands down. With the match seemingly sewn up, up stepped Hauke Wahl with a header, again finding space between two defenders, in the 5th minute of injury time. This is not what Bayern had planned at all, especially with the near Actic like weather. They wanted to have the result sewn up in the 90. The shoot out went on song for both sides in as far as the regulation 5 kicks are concerned. Marc Roca on as a substitute fired his shot pretty centrally allowing Gelios to save it in Bayern’s first kick of sudden death. This gave the chance of a lifetime to Bartels to send the little guys to the next round. He duly sent Neuer the wrong way to write his name into his club folklore.
