With FC Barcelona in rebuilding mode and Real Madrid having a somewhat aging squad, the door is wide open for Atleti to win their first La Liga title since 2014. The loss of Diego Costa should be a cause for alarm as they have enough fire power from Felix, Luis Suarez and Llorente. They have a knack of winning matches they are not entitled to win as evidenced by last night’s result. Apart from Suarez’s goal, Getafe did not do much wrong and matched the home side blow for blow. Suarez’s glancing header was reminiscent of his Barca days. The resurgent Thomas Lemar should have opened the scoring, hitting the post when everyone thought of a cross. They are playing as a compact unit when defending as well in typical Diego Simeone fashion. They have conceded just 5 goals all season, easily the best across all top European divisions.
Real Madrid’s title challenge took a blow last night after being held 1-1 by Elche. Ascencio struck the woodwork on 20 minutes only for Modric to head the ball(looping) into the Elche net for 1-0. A VAR confirmed pen by Fidel Chavez leveled matters. Despite having the most part of the ball for large periods, Real could not come out victorious. They now sit 2 points off the leaders Atleti having played 2 games more.
