A club as big as Manchester United need to win trophies. They have not won a trophy since 2017 when Mourinho was in charge. This year they have got to be one of the favorites for this season’s league cup following their late win over the toffees at Goodison Park. In all honesty it looked as though the lottery of penalties would decide the outcome of last night’s quarterfinal. Edinson Cavani and Martial thought otherwise.
Everton simply did not show up for the first 30 minutes of the first half. United laying siege on Robin Olsen goal with Cavani shooting straight at Olsen at one point. Mason Greenwood came the closest of them all when his flick header just went past the Everton left post. The final 15 minutes of the half saw Everton come to the party at last but they sis not test Henderson enough. The second half kind of drifted with both sides guilty of giving away the ball cheaply especially in midfield. The introduction of Rashford and Martial by Ole signalled urgency on the part of the United manager.Ben Godfrey played a crackerjack of a game deserves a pat on the back for a solid defensive and attacking show on the left side of the Everton defense. Big players come up trumps in big games. Cavani showed this with the defining moment of the match.
The Uruguayan cut inside the retreating Godfrey and unleashed a venomous left footed shot that gave Olsen no prayer of saving it. This was Godfrey’s one and only mistake the whole game and it proved the costliest. Being a once off cup game, Everton commited everyone to attack and left themselves exposed to the counter. Fernandes nearly profited from one of the counter attacks, clipping the post much to the watching 2000 fans’ relief. Eventually they were punished. Rashford fed Martial for an easy finish. Manchester City lie in wait for the red devils in the semis in a repeat of last seasons’ semi final. Surprise package Brentford will face Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham in the other.
