Its two defeats on the spin for the Blues. Wolves’s second half record is no fluke. Goals from Portuguese pair of Podence and Neto made the life of Frank Lampard a little blue. After a period of success going 17 games without a defeat, its shocking how the defence of Chelsea now look jittery especially when dealing with wingers.
Chelsea took the lead after the break(49 mins). Giroud getting ahead of Boly, poking the ball at Rui Patricio who failed to handle the shot. Despite Patricio’s efforts to clear the ball, goal line technology picked up that it had crossed the line. It looked like Wolves had a long way back now. Without Jimenez their main goal threat, they had lacked goals in recent matches. As is customary at Wolves, the second half goal came after 66 minutes. Daniel Podence dummied his way around Reece James creating a gap for him to shoot at. He beat Mendy on his near post to level up the scores.Pedro Neto’s mazy run looked to have won Wolves a penalty after Reece James appeared to step on his foot in the 80th minute. The decision was reversed upon review by the ref. From my vantage point, the video footage is inconclusive. So the ref made a great decision, when in doubt do not give the pen.
I am going to be the devil’s advocate here Chelsea fans but I have to say this. The young man Reece James has been a revelation this season, basically keeping Azpilicueta out of the side, but he had a nightmare yesterday. He was to blame for the Wolves winner as well as the Podence goal. Why do I say this? Look at where the counter attack from Wolves started and look how he reacted. It was like he was having a Saturday morning jog no sense of urgency to get back. Poor Zouma was left to take on the explosive Neto for which he was no match.Mendy did everything right to prevent Neto scoring, he covered his near post and made the angle as tight as possible. The young man James has to pull up his socks.
