What makes Manchester United’s exit from the Champions League this season so infuriating to the fans is that they had two matches to get a single point but they failed to get it. With the quality in their squad this ranks as the worst result in their history in Europe. I now even have doubts they have what it takes to even win the Europa League let alone qualify for next season’s champions league. Lets decipher how they managed to mess up a promising campaign.
After a good first season with Manchester United last campaign, Aaron Wan- Bissaka has regressed. What on earth was he doing in the build up to Angelino’s goal. Second minute of the match , keep things tight do not give anything away. After all it was Leipzig’s game to chase. But no just allow Angelino a free shot and let De Gea deal with it. For the one millionth time coach Ole changed his starting eleven. In comes Luke Shaw who has not played for how many games?. Oh lets play with 2 defensive midfielders just to be safe. THIS IS LEIPZIG NOT BAYERN. Wan-Bissaka looked disinterested in dealing with the cross from Angelino that led to Haindara’s goal on 13 minutes. Haindara given the keys to the last 16 by Luke Shaw.Lets be honest at half time it should have been 4-0 had Leipzig been more sharp in front of goal. 3-5-2 was clearly going to cut it here Ole.
It is time to accept the fact that Martial and Rashford are not going to give you 40 goals per season between them. Cavani is their best bet for goals but he DID NOT TRAVEL due to injury. It is evident that this is true based on this stat. United had a whopping 19 shots at goal this match. They found the net 2 times via a penalty and an OWN GOAL. Another natural goal scorer Ighalo was benched. Ole clearly does not trust him in the big matches. Scott McTominay was a beacon of light in the match he covered so much ground. Donny came in for Telles and formation changes, phew. Best chance for United to pull one back. Free kick by Fernandes on 67 minutes cannoning off the crossbar. As if the football gods were having a laugh at United, a minute later Leipzig made it 3-0. Captain Maguire went to sleep allowing the ball to cut across him for a tap in by Justin Kluivert(Son of Patrick).
United deserved a bit of luck for their persistent shots at goal. A dubious penalty was awarded for a foul on Greenwood. For me at was a shoulder to shoulder challenge with the stronger person coming off better. Its a man’s game. Ref should have waived play on. Bruno who had seemed shaky from the penalty spot lately made no mistake for 3-1.Three minutes later luck smiled on the Red Devils again when a Paul Pogba header was deflected into his own net by Konate for 3-2. It was now all hands on deck for the German side.Konate deserved better he had handled the threat of Rashford and Greenwood so well in the match.Nonetheless Leipzig held on to qualify for the last 16 again. United now have Europa league Thursdays to look forward to in the new year and more Sunday and Monday matches.
