I know things on the pitch are not going so well for the Gunners but that second half performance should be a source of inspiration going forward for them. Yes they need a playmaker ASAP but the fact that Lacazette had more shots on target than Kane and Son combined shout be a positive. On the down side conceding 2 first half goals on transition play should be concerning.
The first goal by Son shows the naive defending that have positioned Arsenal 15th on the log.Just watch Hector Bellerin. He did not know whether to cover the centre back position or the right back position. He should have known that Rob Holding had covered the right back position. Once he realized that he could not adjust his feet accordingly hence he slipped. Son scoring against another former Bayer 04 player Leno. I know most Arsenal fans are blaming the second goal on the fact that Thomas Partey was not on the pitch injured. But where was the cover? Xhaka did not do his job on Sunday afternoon. He was supposed to cover that gaping hole in midfield or Arteta should have signaled Xhaka to cover instead of being that high up.
In the second half in typical Jose fashion they set deep waiting for gaps to exploit seeing that they had a comfortable two goal cushion. I will reiterate what i said earlier in the blog. If Ozil is not available Willian should go more central. Lacazette should be a target man when Aubameyang is not on form. Nevertheless Tottenham deserves to be top of the pile. They may no longer be pretty. But they are now efficient. The most important thing in football is winning and results and Spurs are doing just that. I am a huge fan now of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. He is doing the job of two players. Winning possession and distribution of the ball to kick start the counter. I will have to man up and take the criticism that I leveled against Jose for turning Eric Dier into a central defender from a holding midfielder. Dier is turning out to be the best defender in the league. So kudos goes where they are most due.
