Chelsea booked their spot into the last 16 of the Champions League thanks to a 2-1 win away in France against Rennes. Olivier Giroud underlying his growing reputation as the go to guy when the chips are down, scoring an injury time winner.Frank Lampard’s side has settled well in recent weeks. This coincided with the arrival of Mendy in goal which seemed to calm a defence which was jittery at best in the early months of the season.
It is very interesting though that Chelsea traveled with 3 goalkeepers for this match. Maybe good old Frank has very little trust in his goalkeeper’s fitness. Whichever the reason Chelsea employed a very pragmatic approach to this encounter. Probably wise too because Rennes were basically in the last chance saloon as far as making the last 16 was concerned. Chelsea started the brightest. Timo Werner produced a contender of the miss of the season after skying Hudson-Odoi’s square ball with only Gomis to beat with just 3 minutes on the clock.Werner is yet to convince me as a prolific goal scorer who can match the likes of Chelsea strikers of years gone by such as Drogba and Hasselbaink.
