Manchester United’s narrow lead over West Brom on Saturday night was so timid that one would be mistaking the match as a relegation clash. The match became eventful in the second half when 2 minutes into the half Bruno Fernandes appeared to kick the Baggies’ Gallagher on the shin with the ref awarding a penalty against United. The ref was encouraged to have a look at the pitch side monitor by the VAR ref. Upon second look the ref overturned the decision.
Before long United had a penalty of their own when Mata’s attempted cross was intercepted by the outstretched hand of the West Brom defender. It appeared another hash decision as the defender was not more than 2 metres away from Mata. But this time decision stood. Former United keeper Sam Johnstone saved Fernandes’s initial attempt from the spot but VAR ordered a retake following the keeper’s encroachment from the line. Fernandes made sure on his second attempt. 1-0 United and that’s how it ended up.
