World number 1 Djokovic was outplayed by the sharper Medvedev on Wednesday. His serve was broken in the crucial 7th game of the first when he seemed to be unbalanced when trying to return a fizzing backhand from the Russian with the game in deuce. A double fault on match point by Novak at 5-3 down serving to stay in the set gifted Daniil the double break and the set in the bag. Novak has looked sluggish ever since he was confirmed year end world number 1 and it showed in this match. He was broken in his first service game of the second set after hitting awhat looked like a routine forehand long. To further illustrate my point, take for instance when he was serving with the set at 2-5(30-0). He was in control of the point and all he had to do was smash the overhead but he hit it tamely at Daniil allowing him to make a return. Fortunately he survived that service game but Medvedev wrapped up the match 6-3 on his won serve.
In the second match,Sasha Zverev went off the mark in the Group against Diego Schwartzman who is looking more like the whipping boy of the group. This is not to say he rolled over and died.No. The German looked much sharper mentally than he did in his loss to Medvedev in the first match. He broke Diego in the 6th game of the first with some assured hitting. Diego went for broke when Zverev was serving for the set at 5-3 and went up 40-15 in a flash with great hitting of his own. But Sasha found a way to pull through. 6-3 Zverev first set. My shot of the match was the point won by Diego at set point 5-4 with Zverev serving to stay in.Sasha seemed to have hit a forehand down the line against an unbalanced looking Diego. But somehow Diego’s backhand scoop cleared the net. . Hawkeye confirmed that Sasha had hit the forehand long anyway. 6-4 Schwartzman.
Sasha used his frustrations positively in the final set and broke the Argentine twice to take it 6-3.
