Today is a day of national mourning throughout Germany. Der Mannschaft produce their worst performance at in an international with a 6-0 humbling by Spain. La furia roja were sensational throughout the match and thoroughly deserved their place in the final four of the Nations League.A rejuvenated Alvaro Morata(God bless Juve) powered a header past Neuer on 17 minutes after ghosting away to the left hand side of the German defence from a corner.Sane was the liveliest German early on but he is only one man. Manchester City have not wasted time finding a replacement for David Silva in Ferran Torres. With every single week the club has been vindicated. The goal capping a good performance after Spain unluckily struck the bar with the header.
Things turned dark for Germany 5 minutes after Torres’s goal. Another Man City midfieder Rodri scoring with a well taken header from another corner. The German defence marshaled by Sule and Koch did not cover themselves with glory throughout the match. Ikay Gundogan of all people (Man City) leaving Rodri unmarked.Sergio Ramos had to go off injured before half time and guess who replaced him, Eric Garcia (Man City, I bet Pep was grinning in his living room throughout the whole match). It has certainly been Manchester City’s week on the international stage.
The second half was the Ferran Torres show with the more school boy defending from Germany allowing Gaya to set up Torres unmarked to score past a haples Neuer. Gaya underlying his growing reputation(He is keeping Jordi Alba out of the starting 11). Neuer was anything but hapless when he did not get down early enough to stop Torres’s shot on 71 minutes for the hat trick. On as a substitute Oyarzabal rubbed salt on the wounds of the Germans with a 6th goal for Spain with a minute remaining on the clock. This result will most certainly mean the end of the marriage between Jogi Loew and the German fans which has been on the rocks for a while now. His decision to go with the inexperience Koch and Sule backfired spectacularly here. Calls for a return to the old guard of 2014(Boateng, Muller) has been ignored by the long time German coach.
In my earlier blogs, I criticized the lack of real competition to Bayern. This is now showing in the German national side. German football needs an urgent reboot.
